Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve with a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
