Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
